Although the days get shorter and the temperature dips a little, you might be surprised to know that November is actually one of the best times to visit the Lake District! Cooler days are the perfect excuse to throw on your thick, woolly knits and grab your walking sticks, as there’s adventure all around you in the Lake District.

With it being the month before Christmas, you’ll also be able to feel a buzz in the air as local businesses begin to prepare for the festive season ahead, without the stress of getting bogged down in the holiday rush.

There’s also so much going on! Plus, with it still being the height of the Autumn season, just before the transition into Winter commences, the Lake District scenery is definitely at its most unique and picturesque during the month of November.

Have a little read of some of our suggestions as to why you should visit the Lake District this November…

1) Stunning scenery

Hands down, the best thing about Autumn in the Lake District is the bright and colourful landscapes; and, with Autumn officially beginning at the end of September running right through to late December, the scenery is arguably at its most attractive during November. Who doesn’t want to watch one season blend seamlessly into another?

Imagine the dramatic Lakeland fells draped in blankets of red, as the leaves and the fell-top bracken both adopt a luscious orange colour.  Visualize the sounds of crisp, crunchy leaves under your feet as you stroll along our quaint, countryside trails. Picture being able to see your breath materialize in the chill November airthese are just some of the things we love most about the season.

Therefore, if you’re in search of a tranquil, countryside escape to admire the breath-taking scenery and clear your mind, November is certainly the most charming time to visit the Lake District.

2) Surprisingly dry weather!

Contrary to popular belief, November actually tends to be one of the months with lesser rain fall! For this reason, it makes the stunning backdrops even more enjoyable as you can throw back the hood on your winter coat and really take it all in.

The drier weather also makes way for those fresh, Autumnal mornings we all know and love, where you step outside and feel the cool air against your rosy-red cheeks. These are certainly the best days to embrace the cold weather and take advantage of the abundance of walks the Lake District has to offer.

This is also the time of year you’re most likely to see a cloud inversion due to the presence of colder air. Therefore, if you’re wanting to dodge the winter rain (or even snow), book your next trip to the Lake District this November.

3) Picturesque sunsets

For the reason highlighted in the previous point, dryer weather conditions and cooler air paves the way for some magnificent, Autumnal sunsets. Imagine evening skies alight with tones of bright orange as the sun sets over the dramatic Lake District fells.

There’s also a high possibility of snow-dusted mountain tops which only makes the sunsets that bit more magical, giving you the illusion that you’ve just stepped foot into a fairy-tale.

4) Fewer crowds

Despite the picturesque nature of the season, November is one of the quietest months to visit the Lake District.

There’s no denying that the charming streets of our Lakeland towns can get busy during the summer months, however the seasonal rush certainly quietens off during this timejust before it picks up again closer to Christmas!

HIDDEN GEMS →

During November, you’ll have no problem visiting those tourist hotspots and getting uninterrupted photos with some of the region’s most popular viewpoints.

Therefore, if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat away from bustling crowds, November is the perfect month to book your Lake District getaway.

5) Mulled Wine

Arguably, one of the best things about November in the Lake District is that it is officially acceptable to start drinking mulled wine! Everyone knows the promise of Christmas is generally more exciting than the big day itself, making the run-up to the season the perfect time to treat yourself to this festive delicacy.

FESTIVE BREAKS →

Mulled Wine & Warm Mince Pies

Mulled wine is perfect drink to warm up your hands after a chilly day out on the fells, while getting you excited for the festive month ahead. It will be available in our hotels from early November onwards, which we recommend enjoying next to the comfort of our roaring fireplaces surrounded by those dearest to you.

If mulled wine isn’t your thing, we’ve got an array of other festive treats to tempt you, including Boozy Hot Chocolates, Gingerbread Spiced Lattes and of course, warm Mince Pies.

6) Festive Dining

Now the summer months are long gone and those beach holidays seem a far-off fantasy, it’s time to stop worrying about your ‘summer body’ and completely give in to your temptations. November and December are months to indulge, and you can worry about dieting when January comes round.

Our hotel’s festive dining menus launch early November, making it the ideal month to start enjoying all those naughty yuletide goodies we spend the season longing for.

FESTIVE DINING →

Imagine tucking into succulent slices of roast turkey breast, crispy yet fluffy roast potatoes and who could forget pigs-in-blankets?! If something sweet is what you seek, we will also be launching our Festive Afternoon Teas and the Skiddaw Hotel will be offering a seasonal twist on their Hiker’s Picnic Board.

Our festive menus are extensive and imaginative, guaranteed to satisfy your palette while igniting that festive feeling in your heart.

7) Christmas Lights

All is merry and bright during the month of November in the Lake District, as the quaint little towns switch on their outside Christmas displays for all to see. Expect a twinkling, wonderland as you experience our hotels adorned in stunning Christmas lights from top to toe.

Last year, we invested in some incredible new Christmas lights to spread festive cheer throughout the town of Keswick, down the Borrowdale Valley and within the village of Glenridding.

The local Christmas displays truly are a sight to behold, so if you’re looking for a pre-Christmas break to get the festive juices tingling, a November getaway to the Lake District is an absolute must.

8) Plenty of indoor and outdoor activities

Despite the nights creeping in earlier, there are still plenty of outdoor attractions and activities that are open to the public in November. Whether you fancy trying your hand at kayaking atop of Lake Derwentwater, are tempted to take a walk with an alpaca or would rather ‘go wild’ at the Lake District Wildlife Park, the Lake District is never closed.

If you’re looking to escape the November chill, there are also an array of indoor activities for you to enjoy without the guilt of not using your time wisely. Some of which include Kong Adventure Climbing Wall in Keswick, a trip to the Derwent Pencil Museum, being blown away by the illusions at the Puzzling Place or even an educational visit to the Rheged Centre near Penrith.

What’s more – you can take your furry family member along for the ride, providing they are kept on a lead at all times.
  • The Puzzling Place, Keswick: In the mood to try something a little different and a little weird? You should try Keswick’s optical illusion experience – there are a variety of physics-defying rooms to test…there’s even an anti-gravity room! Well-behaved dogs are free to join you (on a short leash) as you encounter this fun family activity.
  • Ullswater Steamers: This local business has been ongoing for over 160 years! Set sail with your furry friend on a scenic cruise across the tranquil waters of the beautiful Ullswater. Embrace the serenity of nature as you and your pup take in the breathtaking views, gentle breezes and soothing sounds of the water current. Water bowls are accessible and dogs can join you aboard for just £1.

  • Aira ForceGo on a mesmerising adventure and witness the sheer beauty of a cascading waterfall up close. Aira Force is a brilliant photo opportunity and is carefully maintained by the National Trust.  Dogs on a lead are welcome in the following areas: the waterfall, the picnic area and the tea room. There are also regular water bowls scattered around the car park and the tea room to ensure your pup stays hydrated.

On the 17th September, our Skiddaw Hotel played host to Jigsaw and Eden Valley Hospice as they held a ‘Stars to Sunrise’ sponsored walk. Starting from the hotel, they courageously began their 9-mile journey to the top of Skiddaw Fell at 2am. Although they did not witness the sunrise as they’d hoped, this did not cloud the group’s spirit. They continued their walk, returning to Skiddaw Hotel where a complimentary breakfast of porridge, bacon butties, teas and coffees were provided in the hotel’s Greta Suite. The event raised £14,650 – an amazing amount of money that is going to make a massive difference.

The walk was safely guided by experts from the Lakeland Mountain Guides who did a fabulous job guiding the group of 60 walkers on their journey. Well done to everybody involved – you are a gift to our community!

At Lake District Hotels, we recognise that we have a moral obligation to give back to the communities that we are proud to be a part of. We are ecstatic to share that we have raised just over £58,000 for various charities over the years. It is now tradition that we choose a ‘Charity of the Year’, which we support by organising fund-raising events consistently throughout the year.

Our current ‘Charity of the Year’ is Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice which offers personalised one-to-one care to local children and young adults living with life-limiting illnesses. This charity is vitally important to many families who require this kind of support.

If you would like to donate to Jigsaw, you can do so by clicking here: Lake District Hotels’ JustGiving page .

What is Cask Ale Week?

Cask Ale Week is the annual celebration of Britain’s national drink: Cask Ale (or as some call it, Real Ale).

First established by Cask Marque around twenty years ago, this event has continued to be celebrated annually. It is supported by other beer-orientated organisations such as: The British Beer and Pub Association, UK Hospitality, The British Institute of Innkeeping and the Campaign for Real Ale.

Famously a fun-filled event, pubs across the UK can choose to get involved. It provides a great opportunity to discover new brews and show appreciation to firm favourites. Cask Ale Week is a perfect way to socialise with family and friends whilst supporting local business.

Now you have found the perfect Lake District Celebration Package for you, please contact us using the following details and a member of the team will assist you with your booking:

Why should you celebrate a special occasion?

Have you got a special occasion coming up? Maybe you aren’t sure how to celebrate, or even if you should celebrate? Well, here are some reasons why you SHOULD celebrate:

  • Creating Memories: Memories serve to form our identity, emotions and weave our connections with others. They act as an archive for our experiences, enabling us to relive joyful and meaningful events long after they have passed. We can nurture our relationships with our memories as they provide shared stories and bonding experiences with those we love. They enrich our lives and give them purpose.

  • Creating Traditions: Celebrating a milestone or achievement encourages unity and inclusivity within a family, it enables a sense of belonging and a shared identity among relatives. Traditions provide consistency and stability, especially during times of change and uncertainty. It also offers an opportunity for bonding which surpasses generational divides.

  • Promoting Wellbeing: Celebrating special occasions allows us to feel a large variety of positive emotions such as joy, excitement, pride, peace and tranquility. It provides us with a break from routine, taking us into a world where our stressors and responsibilities can be left behind for a short while so we can temporarily feel relief and lightness. We are also reminded to appreciate the supportive circle that exists around us.

  • Marking Milestones: This allows us a period of reflection and renewal as we acknowledge our achievements and progress. We can measure how far we have come and reignite our motivation to continue our self-development in the future. It helps us to gain a sense of accomplishment, boosting self-esteem and find inspiration to set new goals.

Imagine this – you are surrounded by bird song, you lift your head towards the sky and feel the warmth of the sun caressing your face, you take a big inhale of fresh crisp air and then release it slowly. You feel completely at peace. You open your eyes and see a vast array of greenery with frequent splatters of vibrant colour where patches of wildflowers bloom. You feel a smile beginning to creep across your face and it makes you wonder when you last felt this naturally happy.

Does this sound like something you’d love to experience? If so, hiking in the Lake District is the perfect holiday for you!

It is easy to lose yourself in our modern world where our lives are ruled by the importance of our next pay slip. Immersing yourself in nature is an effective way to take a break from the stress of everyday life and improve your mental wellbeing. There are many ways you can do this, but hiking stands out as a timeless and rewarding method to do it. Whether you are a seasoned, well-experienced hiker or a novice, the Lake District has something to offer everybody.

Do you want to experience this feeling of tranquillity but don’t know where to start?

Well, we have done the hard part for you, continue reading for inspiration! Here are some captivating trails that can be reached easily from the welcoming doorsteps of our own hotels:

1. Lodore Falls

Difficulty: Easy

Duration: Around 25 minutes.

Recommended Accommodation: Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa

Notes: The easiest route for the public starts from the National Trust’s Kettlewell car park. The route is very short and easy. For hotel guests, the route can be taken directly from our retreating gardens. The waterfall is a beautiful scene to behold and is often used by wedding parties for photo opportunities!

2. Derwent Water Circular

Difficulty: Easy – Moderate (depending on ability)

Duration: Just under 4 hours.

Recommended Accommodation: Lodore Falls Hotel & SpaSkiddaw HotelThe Kings Arms Hotel and Inn on the Square.

Notes: Due to the circular nature of this walk, this ten-mile route is easy to follow. You can begin from any point; the paths are flat and don’t require a great amount of skill to tackle. It is a beautiful trail, taking you both through woodlands which are full of life, and along the lake shore itself.

Why not stop at Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa for a refreshing drink and a hearty meal either to keep you going or as a reward for your hard work?

It may be a tough walk for those lacking walking experience or with limited mobility. However, the lake has a boating launch which can be used on a ‘hop on, hop off’ basis. The launch stops are as follows: Keswick, Ashness Gate, Lodore, High Brandelhow, Low Brandelhow, Hawes End, Lingholm, Nichol End. Timetable and pricing information can be found on Keswick Launch’s website.

3. Surprise View - Lodore Falls, Watendlath Tarn, and Surprise View Circular

Difficulty: Moderate

Duration: 3 hours

Recommended Accommodation: Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa

Notes: Surprise View must not be missed if you are staying close by! It is recommended that you download a map for this route as it can sometimes prove difficult to follow. I would suggest that the route is planned so you end the walk at Surprise View; this will ensure that you are rewarded with breathtaking scenery after your hard work. The terrain can be quite rough, often made worse by wet weather but, not to worry; Surprise View can be reached easily by car so it can be experienced by everybody. For an easier walk underfoot, you can walk up the public road also.

4. Catbells Fell

Difficulty: Moderate

Duration: 3 hours

Recommended Accommodation: The Kings Arms HotelSkiddaw Hotel and Inn on the Square

Notes: Catbells is a hugely popular trek. It has stunning views to offer and there are many different routes that can be taken to get there. The Hawes End to Catbells route is highly recommended due to the beautiful scenes of the lake that can be viewed along the way. It should be mentioned that this walk does include some scrambling so may be viewed as difficult by some people.

All that walking is sure to make you hungry! Why not check out our Hikers Board at Skiddaw Hotel for a tasty and affordable option?

5. Aira Force

Difficulty: Moderate

Duration: 1 hour

Recommended Accommodation: Inn on the Lake

Notes: The Aira Force Circular is relatively easy but there are steep inclines involved and wet conditions can cause some difficulty. It is a beautiful route with a high frequency of photo opportunities! The great thing about this walk is that there are many other routes close by such as Ullswater Way and High Force, so if a one-hour walk doesn’t leave you feeling satisfied, it is easy to prolong the duration!

Inn on the Lake is the perfect place to end your walk; with a wide range of dining options, there is something to appeal to everybody’s taste. Why not try out afternoon tea in the Orangery or grab some pub grub in the Rambler’s Bar?

6. Ullswater Way

Difficulty: Hard

Duration: 9 hours 30 minutes

Recommended Accommodation: Inn on the Lake

Notes: It is best to dedicate a full day to this route due to the estimated duration. There is a large variety of terrain involved which makes it a route best served to more experienced hikers. The trail involves climbing steep rough inclines, so it is highly recommended that walking boots/shoes are worn to avoid injury. It also includes walking on the road so it should be highlighted that you remain aware of any vehicles that may come your way. It is a truly beautiful walk and creates a euphoric, rewarding feeling when you come to its end!

Inn on the Lake is visible along this route…see if you can spot us from the other side of the lake!

On Friday 16th June, to celebrate World Cucumber Day, we are offering guests the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing Hendrick’s Gin and Fever-Tree Tonic in exchange for a cucumber at any of our three Keswick hotels.

The exclusive ‘happy hour’ will run from 4pm-5pm and the participating bars include the Front Bar and Back Bar at the Inn on the Square, the bar & conservatory at the Skiddaw Hotel and the newly refurbished Kings Arms bar which are all located within Keswick’s Market Square. All participating bars are dog friendly and there is some outdoor seating available at each venue should the sun show its face.

Why a cucumber?

The cucumber plays a very special role in the actual distillation of Hendrick’s Gin with the clear drops having distinct flavour notes of cucumber. Therefore, a Hendrick’s cocktail should always be completed with a slice of cucumber, which adds an extraordinary rounded flavour to the gin. It is for this reason that no other vegetable can be used as a form of currency to mark the occasion.

Win a bottle of gin!

What’s more, in anticipation of an influx of cucumbers, the family-owned group are running a competition asking for recipe suggestions on what the hotels can do with all the green vegetables. Suggestions can be emailed to marketing@lakedistricthotels.net and the best idea will be selected as the winner. The winning entrant will be rewarded with a bottle of Hendricks Gin to celebrate. The winner will be contacted by email on Tuesday 20th June.

Terms & conditions

In order for customers to acquire their free Hendrick’s G&T, cucumbers must be fresh and only one drink is permitted per person. Cucumbers can only be exchanged for a gin & tonic between the hours of 4pm-5pm on Friday 16th June. Unfortunately, drink substitutions are not permitted.

Gin & tonics can be exchanged for a cucumber at the following Keswick locations:

King Charles III has taken residency at 6 hotels in the Lake District, with Lake District Hotels Ltd encouraging guests and visitors to take a snappy photo of the sovereign, with the best photo winning a lavish prize.

To commemorate the upcoming Royal Coronation, the cardboard kings have been carefully placed across all 6 of the group’s properties, which include the Inn on the Lake at Ullswater, the Borrowdale Hotel and Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa within the Borrowdale Valley as well as the Inn on the Square, Skiddaw Hotel and Kings Arms Hotel in the centre of Keswick.

Taking the celebrations one step further, the family-owned group have launched a social media competition where guests are encouraged to locate the royal monarch within each hotel, snap a photo with him and share their photos on social media.

“As a family, we love traditions and celebrations, and expect that the month of May, with its 3 bank holidays, will be a time of conviviality. We can’t wait to see what our guests’ photos will be like and look forward to sharing them with everyone!”  – Dani Hope, Director of Lake District Hotels

To be in with the chance of winning a delicious Coronation afternoon tea for two, guests who participate must tag either the relevant hotel Facebook page in their post OR the Lake District Hotels group Instagram account.

Over the next few weeks, team members from the hotel group will peruse through all entries posted online and the single best photo will be announced as the grand winner on Tuesday 9th March following the Coronation.

The noble prize of afternoon tea for two can either be taken at the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa, Inn on the Lake or Borrowdale Hotel.

Multiple entries are permitted and images may be shared on either Facebook or Instagram. The competition runs from 10th April – 9th May, however the regal cut-outs will remain intact up until the end of May for guests to continue to enjoy.

What’s more, from 1st May an exclusive ‘Coronation Afternoon Tea’ will be available at the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa, Inn on the Lake and Borrowdale Hotel which is complete with a selection of sweet and savoury delights inspired by King Charles’ favourite foods; including a chocolate & earl grey brownie, a lemon curd tart and a savoury lime muffin with smoked trout & caviar.

The stately spread will also be served at the Inn on the Lake Orangery on Monday 8th May at the hotel’s bank holiday ‘Coronation celebration’ where the hotel will be joined by local pianist, Karen West, and talented vocalist, Isobel Godden, who will entertain diners with a selection of musical theatre songs.

Also performing on the day is the gifted acoustic youth ensemble, IRIS, who will amuse guests with an eclectic arrangement of popular classics; from the Beatles, to Leonard Cohen, to Billie Eilish.

Live music will run from 12pm-5pm. Lunches are served from 12pm-2:30pm and Coronation Afternoon Teas will be served from 2:30pm-5pm. To book a table, please call 017684 82444 or book a table online here.
