Although the days get shorter and the temperature dips a little, you might be surprised to know that November is actually one of the best times to visit the Lake District! Cooler days are the perfect excuse to throw on your thick, woolly knits and grab your walking sticks, as there’s adventure all around you in the Lake District.

With it being the month before Christmas, you’ll also be able to feel a buzz in the air as local businesses begin to prepare for the festive season ahead, without the stress of getting bogged down in the holiday rush.

There’s also so much going on! Plus, with it still being the height of the Autumn season, just before the transition into Winter commences, the Lake District scenery is definitely at its most unique and picturesque during the month of November.

Have a little read of some of our suggestions as to why you should visit the Lake District this November…

1) Stunning scenery

Hands down, the best thing about Autumn in the Lake District is the bright and colourful landscapes; and, with Autumn officially beginning at the end of September running right through to late December, the scenery is arguably at its most attractive during November. Who doesn’t want to watch one season blend seamlessly into another?

Imagine the dramatic Lakeland fells draped in blankets of red, as the leaves and the fell-top bracken both adopt a luscious orange colour.  Visualize the sounds of crisp, crunchy leaves under your feet as you stroll along our quaint, countryside trails. Picture being able to see your breath materialize in the chill November airthese are just some of the things we love most about the season.

Therefore, if you’re in search of a tranquil, countryside escape to admire the breath-taking scenery and clear your mind, November is certainly the most charming time to visit the Lake District.

2) Surprisingly dry weather!

Contrary to popular belief, November actually tends to be one of the months with lesser rain fall! For this reason, it makes the stunning backdrops even more enjoyable as you can throw back the hood on your winter coat and really take it all in.

The drier weather also makes way for those fresh, Autumnal mornings we all know and love, where you step outside and feel the cool air against your rosy-red cheeks. These are certainly the best days to embrace the cold weather and take advantage of the abundance of walks the Lake District has to offer.

This is also the time of year you’re most likely to see a cloud inversion due to the presence of colder air. Therefore, if you’re wanting to dodge the winter rain (or even snow), book your next trip to the Lake District this November.

3) Picturesque sunsets

For the reason highlighted in the previous point, dryer weather conditions and cooler air paves the way for some magnificent, Autumnal sunsets. Imagine evening skies alight with tones of bright orange as the sun sets over the dramatic Lake District fells.

There’s also a high possibility of snow-dusted mountain tops which only makes the sunsets that bit more magical, giving you the illusion that you’ve just stepped foot into a fairy-tale.

4) Fewer crowds

Despite the picturesque nature of the season, November is one of the quietest months to visit the Lake District.

There’s no denying that the charming streets of our Lakeland towns can get busy during the summer months, however the seasonal rush certainly quietens off during this timejust before it picks up again closer to Christmas!

HIDDEN GEMS →

During November, you’ll have no problem visiting those tourist hotspots and getting uninterrupted photos with some of the region’s most popular viewpoints.

Therefore, if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat away from bustling crowds, November is the perfect month to book your Lake District getaway.

5) Mulled Wine

Arguably, one of the best things about November in the Lake District is that it is officially acceptable to start drinking mulled wine! Everyone knows the promise of Christmas is generally more exciting than the big day itself, making the run-up to the season the perfect time to treat yourself to this festive delicacy.

FESTIVE BREAKS →

Mulled Wine & Warm Mince Pies

Mulled wine is perfect drink to warm up your hands after a chilly day out on the fells, while getting you excited for the festive month ahead. It will be available in our hotels from early November onwards, which we recommend enjoying next to the comfort of our roaring fireplaces surrounded by those dearest to you.

If mulled wine isn’t your thing, we’ve got an array of other festive treats to tempt you, including Boozy Hot Chocolates, Gingerbread Spiced Lattes and of course, warm Mince Pies.

6) Festive Dining

Now the summer months are long gone and those beach holidays seem a far-off fantasy, it’s time to stop worrying about your ‘summer body’ and completely give in to your temptations. November and December are months to indulge, and you can worry about dieting when January comes round.

Our hotel’s festive dining menus launch early November, making it the ideal month to start enjoying all those naughty yuletide goodies we spend the season longing for.

FESTIVE DINING →

Imagine tucking into succulent slices of roast turkey breast, crispy yet fluffy roast potatoes and who could forget pigs-in-blankets?! If something sweet is what you seek, we will also be launching our Festive Afternoon Teas and the Skiddaw Hotel will be offering a seasonal twist on their Hiker’s Picnic Board.

Our festive menus are extensive and imaginative, guaranteed to satisfy your palette while igniting that festive feeling in your heart.

7) Christmas Lights

All is merry and bright during the month of November in the Lake District, as the quaint little towns switch on their outside Christmas displays for all to see. Expect a twinkling, wonderland as you experience our hotels adorned in stunning Christmas lights from top to toe.

Last year, we invested in some incredible new Christmas lights to spread festive cheer throughout the town of Keswick, down the Borrowdale Valley and within the village of Glenridding.

The local Christmas displays truly are a sight to behold, so if you’re looking for a pre-Christmas break to get the festive juices tingling, a November getaway to the Lake District is an absolute must.

8) Plenty of indoor and outdoor activities

Despite the nights creeping in earlier, there are still plenty of outdoor attractions and activities that are open to the public in November. Whether you fancy trying your hand at kayaking atop of Lake Derwentwater, are tempted to take a walk with an alpaca or would rather ‘go wild’ at the Lake District Wildlife Park, the Lake District is never closed.

If you’re looking to escape the November chill, there are also an array of indoor activities for you to enjoy without the guilt of not using your time wisely. Some of which include Kong Adventure Climbing Wall in Keswick, a trip to the Derwent Pencil Museum, being blown away by the illusions at the Puzzling Place or even an educational visit to the Rheged Centre near Penrith.

Why should you celebrate a special occasion?

Have you got a special occasion coming up? Maybe you aren’t sure how to celebrate, or even if you should celebrate? Well, here are some reasons why you SHOULD celebrate:

  • Creating Memories: Memories serve to form our identity, emotions and weave our connections with others. They act as an archive for our experiences, enabling us to relive joyful and meaningful events long after they have passed. We can nurture our relationships with our memories as they provide shared stories and bonding experiences with those we love. They enrich our lives and give them purpose.

  • Creating Traditions: Celebrating a milestone or achievement encourages unity and inclusivity within a family, it enables a sense of belonging and a shared identity among relatives. Traditions provide consistency and stability, especially during times of change and uncertainty. It also offers an opportunity for bonding which surpasses generational divides.

  • Promoting Wellbeing: Celebrating special occasions allows us to feel a large variety of positive emotions such as joy, excitement, pride, peace and tranquility. It provides us with a break from routine, taking us into a world where our stressors and responsibilities can be left behind for a short while so we can temporarily feel relief and lightness. We are also reminded to appreciate the supportive circle that exists around us.

  • Marking Milestones: This allows us a period of reflection and renewal as we acknowledge our achievements and progress. We can measure how far we have come and reignite our motivation to continue our self-development in the future. It helps us to gain a sense of accomplishment, boosting self-esteem and find inspiration to set new goals.

In the tranquil and picturesque landscapes of Borrowdale, a small village tucked away in the heart of the English Lake District, an enigmatic phenomenon has captivated the local community and art enthusiasts alike. Known as the Borrowdale Banksy, this anonymous artist has left a trail of thought-provoking and visually stunning works scattered throughout the village, making gravity-defying art with stones on the felltops.

What does the Borrowdale Banksy do?

The Borrowdale Banksy’s art is characterised by its unbelievability, as (s)he makes stones appear to defy all known laws of physics by forming arcs and circles, perfectly framing the natural landscape.

Every sculpture invites viewers to reflect on the beauty of the Lake District, and appreciate how simple, yet captivating nature can be.

Despite their simplicity, each sculpture serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty and resilience that can be found even in the most unexpected places.

Locals and tourists have rushed to share their snaps of the artist’s work, with the Borrowdale Banksy even featuring on the BBC News, and going viral on social media!

Who is the Borrowdale Banksy?

What makes the Borrowdale Banksy even more intriguing is the shroud of secrecy surrounding their identity. Just like the renowned street artist Banksy, this elusive figure operates under a pseudonym, leaving locals and visitors to speculate about their true identity and motives.

Some whisper that the Borrowdale Banksy is a talented resident with a hidden talent, while others believe it to be a traveling artist who finds solace in the quiet charm of Borrowdale. Others believe that the Borrowdale Banksy is multiple people, talented tourists united in making these sculptures.

Regardless of their identity, the Borrowdale Banksy has undeniably made a profound impact on the village. Their artwork has sparked conversations, brought people together, and rejuvenated forgotten spaces. Walls that once blended into the background now stand out as vibrant testaments to the power of art to inspire and transform.

Why does the Borrowdale Banksy make the sculptures?

The Borrowdale Banksy’s art serves as a gentle reminder that creativity knows no bounds and can flourish in the unlikeliest of places. It encourages us to appreciate the beauty in our surroundings, to question our assumptions, and to find inspiration in unexpected moments. The village of Borrowdale has become an open-air gallery, where the locals eagerly await the appearance of each new piece, hoping to catch a glimpse into the mind of this mysterious artist.

As the Borrowdale Banksy’s legacy continues to unfold, one thing remains certain: their art has left an indelible mark on the village, reminding us all of the profound impact that a single stone or slate can have on the world.

This beer garden in Keswick has recently been refurbished and is looking fresh as a daisy.

Borrowdale Hotel garden

The final outdoor terrace in the Lake District that makes our list has to be the pretty garden at the Borrowdale Hotel. The gardeners really take pride in their work and it shows, as they have one of the prettiest gardens in the area.

The Borrowdale Hotel is also renowned for its magnolia tree that blooms twice a year. Guests return year on year just to see this alone.

Unlike the Lodore Falls and Inn on the Lake, the Borrowdale Hotel garden is a bit smaller and more intimate, which is nice if you want to escape the crowds. It would also be rude not to partake in a spot of afternoon tea while enjoying the plants and flowers in true British fashion.

King Charles III has taken residency at 6 hotels in the Lake District, with Lake District Hotels Ltd encouraging guests and visitors to take a snappy photo of the sovereign, with the best photo winning a lavish prize.

To commemorate the upcoming Royal Coronation, the cardboard kings have been carefully placed across all 6 of the group’s properties, which include the Inn on the Lake at Ullswater, the Borrowdale Hotel and Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa within the Borrowdale Valley as well as the Inn on the Square, Skiddaw Hotel and Kings Arms Hotel in the centre of Keswick.

Taking the celebrations one step further, the family-owned group have launched a social media competition where guests are encouraged to locate the royal monarch within each hotel, snap a photo with him and share their photos on social media.

“As a family, we love traditions and celebrations, and expect that the month of May, with its 3 bank holidays, will be a time of conviviality. We can’t wait to see what our guests’ photos will be like and look forward to sharing them with everyone!”  – Dani Hope, Director of Lake District Hotels

To be in with the chance of winning a delicious Coronation afternoon tea for two, guests who participate must tag either the relevant hotel Facebook page in their post OR the Lake District Hotels group Instagram account.

Over the next few weeks, team members from the hotel group will peruse through all entries posted online and the single best photo will be announced as the grand winner on Tuesday 9th March following the Coronation.

The noble prize of afternoon tea for two can either be taken at the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa, Inn on the Lake or Borrowdale Hotel.

Multiple entries are permitted and images may be shared on either Facebook or Instagram. The competition runs from 10th April – 9th May, however the regal cut-outs will remain intact up until the end of May for guests to continue to enjoy.

What’s more, from 1st May an exclusive ‘Coronation Afternoon Tea’ will be available at the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa, Inn on the Lake and Borrowdale Hotel which is complete with a selection of sweet and savoury delights inspired by King Charles’ favourite foods; including a chocolate & earl grey brownie, a lemon curd tart and a savoury lime muffin with smoked trout & caviar.

The stately spread will also be served at the Inn on the Lake Orangery on Monday 8th May at the hotel’s bank holiday ‘Coronation celebration’ where the hotel will be joined by local pianist, Karen West, and talented vocalist, Isobel Godden, who will entertain diners with a selection of musical theatre songs.

Also performing on the day is the gifted acoustic youth ensemble, IRIS, who will amuse guests with an eclectic arrangement of popular classics; from the Beatles, to Leonard Cohen, to Billie Eilish.

Live music will run from 12pm-5pm. Lunches are served from 12pm-2:30pm and Coronation Afternoon Teas will be served from 2:30pm-5pm. To book a table, please call 017684 82444 or book a table online here.

The historic Borrowdale Hotel situated within the pretty Borrowdale Valley has received a new lease of life following a contemporary renovation project.

The traditional hotel, which first opened its doors back in 1866, closed at the beginning of 2023 for 2-months to modernise its reception, restaurant and two lounges.

Lake District Hotels‘ 3 Directors envisioned bringing the hotel’s décor into the 21st century with a more contemporary design scheme, however, they were careful to do it in a way that would be respectful to the traditional interiors and historic features that had already captured the hearts of many repeat guests.

“Making big changes to the Borrowdale Hotel was always going to be a risk because there are so many returning customers who enjoy the hotel’s historic features. It was important for us to give them a space that retains the hotel’s heritage feel, but in a more distinctly modern fashion that has moved with the times. We are confident that we have produced a product that ticks both boxes.” – Dani Hope, Director of Lake District Hotels

What inspired the risky refurbishment project?

In true Lake District fashion, the design project was inspired by the outdoor landscapes surrounding the hotel, whilst plush furnishings were incorporated to instil a feeling of luxury. Examples of local inspiration can be seen through the use of earthy tones and natural materials throughout.

Food for thought…

The most notable transformation is arguably the hotel restaurant, which has been converted into a graceful, light-flooded space with an abundance of elegant touches; from flauti tiles that have been incorporated into a new breakfast bar and a newly plastered ceiling with intricate beading, to lavish green marble tables and bespoke banquette seating.

Providing guests with a warm welcome

Another area that has received a noticeable upgrade is the hotel entrance. Guests are now greeted by a fresh space complete with bespoke open shelving allowing glimpses through to the roaring fireplace and inviting features of the cosy entrance lounge. Additionally, a contemporary reception desk has been installed which is coated in beautiful mosaic tiles to modernise the check-in experience.

History in the making

Also donning a fresh appearance is the generously sized resident’s lounge, which offers a feel of relaxed Georgian elegance in a more modern setting. The focal point of the striking lounge is the refurbished fireplace which is complemented by comfortable seating and homely furnishings; giving guests that home away from home feel.

This cosy yet luxurious space has retained and amplified its historic features, seen through the preservation of the grandmother clock and the addition of a colossal gallery wall made up of historic images collected throughout the Borrowdale Hotel’s rich history.

Take a trip down memory lane

Other historic elements of the hotel which remain intact are the butler’s bells located in the reception corridor, the grandfather clock in the entrance lounge and the hotel’s iconic wine cellar in the restaurant that can hold over 1000 bottles of wine.

“The new design allows guests to truly appreciate and understand the legacy of the hotel throughout the years, but in a luxurious environment that feels welcoming to those of any age” – Kit Graves, Director of Lake District Hotels

The 4-star Borrowdale Hotel is open daily for afternoon teas, bar meals and light bites. In addition, the hotel’s iconic Sunday lunch is served weekly with roast meats served from a traditional silver carving trolley. Overnight accommodation is available starting from £160 per night and bookings can be made via the website.

We’ve all been there. It’s the weekend and the family’s going out for some traditional afternoon tea to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. But now you’re panicking because all those little formalities and complex protocols seem daunting. Do you hold your tea cup with your little finger sticking up? Which goes on the scone first, jam or cream? And how do you even cut open a scone anyway?

If these worries play out in your head every time someone suggests going out for afternoon tea, then fear not, because we have all the answers for you!

Afternoon Tea Etiquette

What do you do with the napkin?

The napkin (NOT called serviette) is an essential part of afternoon tea, although many people forget about it. The first thing you should do with the napkin is to unfold it from whatever fancy way it is set out and then fold it again, but this time in half. Then, you should lay it gently on your lap with the crease pointing towards you and the loose ends pointing towards the table.

DO NOT tuck it into your shirt! This makes you look like a baby with a bib.

How do you stir the tea?

Many people make the mistake of stirring their tea in a circular motion. “Well, of course,” you may say, “that’s how those posh people do it on TV.” But they’re wrong!

You should NEVER stir sugar into your tea in a circle. Not, at least, in public. This is because, if you are dining at a hotel, they will most likely provide you with sugar cubes, as this is an afternoon tea tradition. If you were to stir it round and round the cup, the sugar would just get caught into a sort-of vortex and fall to the bottom.

The correct way to stir your tea is in a back and forth motion, because this helps the sugar to dissolve. Do it gently so as not to splash any tea over the side of the cup.

Do you pick up the cup with the saucer?

YES! This is the proper way of drinking tea on formal occasions. Traditionally, this would allow those enjoying afternoon tea at a derby or a polo match to have their tea while walking around.

How do you hold a teacup?

One of the biggest myths around drinking tea in a posh china cup is about whether you raise your pinkie finger or not. Many of us may occasionally do this as a joke to pretend to be posh, but it is NOT correct etiquette.

How you should actually hold your teacup is by placing the handle between your thumb and index finger (with the thumb on top), and using your middle, ring and little fingers to support the handle from underneath.

Do you use a knife to cut the scone?

Okay, so this one’s a bit unusual and probably isn’t the answer you’re expecting, but no, you DO NOT cut open a scone with a knife!

This may sound unusual, but the proper way is to break it open with your hands. Scones tend to have an indent around their middles so that you can easily tear them apart. Of course, do this gently and carefully. You don’t want a crumbled scone!

(Side note: it’s pronounced sk-ohn, not sk-oan)

Can I put the jam and cream straight on the scone?

Absolutely not! That’s as bad as double-dipping.

The polite way of taking some jam and cream for your scone is to scoop them out of the pots with a knife or spoon and then put them onto the side of your plate. From here, you can apply them to the two halves of the scone.

This way, you’re not getting jam in the cream pot or vice-versa. It’s all about thinking of other people.

Which goes first, jam or cream?

This is probably the most controversial topic concerning afternoon tea. In most cases, it doesn’t really matter. You can choose as you like. But if you’re from Cornwall or Devon, or just simply visiting, it really does matter.

In Cornwall, the accepted method is to apply the jam first and then spread the slotted cream on top. Devonians, however, argue that the cream goes on first, followed by the jam. But, if you’re wanting to eat afternoon tea like the Queen, then you should go jam first. Her Majesty knows best, after all!

(Tip: either way you apply the jam and cream, you should spread them out neatly and gently. Please don’t dollop them on and swirl them around!)

Should I put the scones back together once the jam and cream has been applied?

*sigh* No.

This one seems self-explanatory, but people still make this mistake. You should NEVER (ever, ever) sandwich the two halves of the scone together. This should be made a crime!

Please just be a normal human being and eat the scone halves separately. Please?

How should I clean my face with my napkin?

When you spill food on your clothes, do you smudge it around with a cloth? No! You dab, dab, dab it. It’s the same principle for using a napkin. Just dab gently around your mouth, or even press it to your face if you’ve made a proper mess… but DON’T wipe!

How do you eat the finger sandwiches?

One at a time, please! DO NOT take several sandwiches at once and stuff them into your face. We’re not animals! I know they look small enough to fit into your mouth, but the polite way is to pick one from the plate and take normal sized bites from it.

Do you eat the cakes with a knife and fork?

Yes, absolutely! Again, the cakes at afternoon tea are generally small and bite-sized, but occasionally you may get tarts or slices of Victoria sponge and these should be eaten with a knife and fork.

Cut up the cake into smaller pieces and use your fork to lift each one into your mouth.

Should do you drink Prosecco?

It seems only appropriate to order a glass of fizz to enjoy alongside your afternoon tea, however if you do, then it’s best to take it in small sips. This is the sophisticated way and allows you to enjoy the taste of the wine.

It’s never a good idea to get drunk at a nice, quiet afternoon tea with your friends and family, so try to slow down on the bubbly!
