Inn on the Lake hosted a holly jolly Christmas Wreath Masterclass and Afternoon Tea on Wednesday 29th November. We were so excited to receive a great surge of interest in this event and we were able to put on a second date the following day on Thursday 30th November too. Each event was truly wholesome, perfect for immersing our guest in the festive spirit!

The Christmas Wreath Masterclass

The masterclass was led by the brilliant Laura from Greenwheat Flowers. She gave passionate and charismatic guidance to participants and really helped everyone to fully absorb themselves into the art of wreathing. She gave her expertise on the benefits of using fresh materials and shared stories of how to source them; from asking neighbours to visiting local farms such as Strawberry Hill, she demonstrated that there are a variety of opportunities to find lovely foliage.

Laura set up shop in our beautiful Glenridding Suite which is home to stunning views that sweep from our Terrace, through the meticulously maintained gardens, down to the lakeshore of Ullswater and its surrounding fells. The Glenridding Suite seemed to turn into a replica of Santa’s workshop as festive tunes played, Christmas trees glowed and the distinct smell of fresh pine filled the air.

Each member of the class crafted their own wreaths, which were all unique and had their own personal charm. Some participants even brought their own decorations from home to include in their works of art. Laura expressed afterwards how well all wreaths had turned out and shared a secret to be remembered – it is not always best to have a set plan when it comes to wreath-making as the materials consist of natural elements that won’t always adhere to what you want them to do!

Festive Afternoon Tea

After admiring the handiwork created during Laura’s class, the group were seated in the beautiful, decked out Orangery for a spot of festive Afternoon Tea. This includes a mix of savoury and sweet treats, each sporting popular flavours of the Christmas period. The cakes are intricately decorated to the point of perfection and are truly delicious. Bottles of prosecco and wine could be seen pouring at various tables around the room, further proof that the festive season is officially here!

We had some lovely feedback on social media…

Will we see you next year?

If this sounds like the perfect event for you, keep an eye on our socials for the release of next years tickets.

Standing proud on the lakeshore of Ullswater within the charming village of Glenridding, the Inn on the Lake hotel is a Lake District gem in its own right. Over the years, our lakefront hotel has developed a stellar reputation among guests, but it’s not just our friendly hospitality that people return year on year for.

Although we are located within a charming Lake District village, the number of activities available to guests from our doorstep is remarkable. From thrill-seeking activities that people deliberately travel to the Lake District for, to the more relaxing opportunities that allow you to unwind amongst nature. Whether you’re ticking off the Wainwrights, seeking solace in the wide-open countryside or fancy trying your hand at a new hobby; your stay at the Inn on the Lake can be whatever you make it. One thing is for certain – you will never be bored!

1. Ullswater Steamers

The Lake District got its name for a reason… and what better way to explore the beauty of the area not by foot, not by car, but atop of the relaxing ripples of the lakes themselves!

The Ullswater Steamers are an award-winning local attraction, taking guests on a water cruise around one of the area’s most beautiful lakes. What’s more, they are open 363 days a year!

Be blown away by the panoramic scenery that surrounds you and get your bearings with all the various villages that Ullswater has to offer. There’s a pier located within Glenridding itself which is approximately a 5 – 10-minute walk from the hotel.

2. Hike or Bike

The Lake District is a haven for keen walkers, cyclists or those who simply wish to enjoy the fresh air and open spaces. Luckily, the Glenridding area has a vast selection of outdoor walks and cycle routes for people of varying abilities.

Glenridding and Patterdale (a couple of miles down the road) are the perfect base for a number of popular walks or cycle trails. Take advantage of Lake District Hotels’ Hike & Bike book available to purchase from the hotel itself. The book details a number of comprehensive walks and cycle routes that you can embark on as soon as you step foot outside the hotel.

Hike & Bike books are charged at a discounted price to hotel residents at £3.50 (RRP – £5.50). Please ask the reception if you wish to purchase one.

3. Aira Force

A trip to Ullswater is not complete without visiting one of the Lake District’s most breath-taking waterfalls. Not only does a trip to Aira Force reward you with incredible views of the grand waterfall, but the numerous trails leading to it around the woodland area makes for a fun day out for all the family.

Visit Aira Force itself, or you can combine the visit with a brief walk up Gowbarrow Fell which offers fabulous views across the lake to the hotel itself.

There are a few different National Trust car parks you can park at to access the waterfall, or if you’re feeling active, you can walk straight to it from the hotel entrance via the Ullswater Way. The walk is 3 miles long and takes you along a flat, well-surfaced path.

4. Tackle Helvellyn via Striding Edge

Few people visit the Lake District that haven’t already heard of the legendary Wainwright fell that is Helvellynand if you haven’t heard of it before you visit, you certainly will have by the time you leave!

Despite not being the tallest fell in the Lake District, it is certainly one of the most popular, with many people opting to climb this mountain rather than the likes of Scafell Pike as the views from the top are far nicer.

Although there are a selection of routes up Helvellyn, one of the most famous (and most popular) is the route via Striding Edge. This walk arguably offers the most spectacular views of all, plus it gives walkers an adrenaline boost as they scramble over the exposed ridges, with valleys unfolding each side of you.

The walk starts from Glenridding itself and the minimum time it will take you to conquer this walk is approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes. Afterwards, you can return to the comfort of the Inn on the Lake where you can reward yourself with a delicious meal in the Orangery or Rambler’s Bar and a proper pint of Cumbrian ale to boot!

5. Enjoy the views from the hotel lounge and gardens

The Inn on the Lake lounges are a hotspot for those looking for an unwinding time in the Lake District. As the weather can be somewhat unpredictable and occasionally on the cooler side, the large lounge windows provide guests with steady views across the lake and over the surrounding fells without the threat of getting wet.

If it is a dry day however, we strongly recommend enjoying the scenery from the 15 acres of hotel grounds at your disposal. The landscaped grounds are meticulously maintained and extend down onto a private jetty that oversees Ullswater lake.

One thing is guaranteed, whatever the weather and whichever the season, you’ll still be rewarded with spectacular views of the area whether you admire it from inside the hotel or out.

6. Try cold water therapy in Ullswater

Cold water swimming is the new trend in the Lake District,  wet suits are flying off the shelves left, right and centre. With 7 miles of fresh water and a selection of beaches dotted around its shores, Ullswater is a great place to go wild swimming.

If you fancy trying your hand at cold water therapy in the Lake District, why not book a swim session with an experienced guide? They will show you the best hotspots for open water swimming and give you some top tips should you wish to dabble with the activity again in future.

There are many benefits to be felt from cold water therapy such as higher toleration to stress, improved circulation, reduced muscle soreness, boosted brain power and many more…read our below article to find out full details.

WILD SWIMMING BENEFITS →

7. Walk the Ullswater Way

Mentioned previously as a route that will take you straight to Aira Force from the hotel, the Ullswater Way is a 20-mile walking route around the outskirts of Ullswater lake. By walking the Ullswater Way, you’re experiencing the area that inspired William Wordsworth’s iconic ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’ poem.

Although mainly flat, the route is a long one, so if you do wish to walk it, we recommend wearing an appropriate pair of walking shoes and making sure you’ve got plenty of snacks to give you an energy boost when you need it most!

Don’t forget, you can break the walk up into different sections, or catch an Ullswater Steamer back to Glenridding from Pooley Bridge or Aira Force.

8. Water Sports

Just a 6 minute walk from Inn on the Lake, you will find St Patrick’s Boat Landing. They have a variety of water-based activities you and the whole family can enjoy, you can hire: rowing boats, motor boats, Canadian canoes and fishing boats. Whether you are adventure-driven or just looking to drift peacefully around the Lake, they have options tailored to cater for everyone. Sailing is a perfectly enjoyable way to enjoy Ullswater.

Unlike sailing, you don’t have to be lionhearted to have a go on a stand-up paddle-board! If you fancy taking to the water in a more leisurely manner, then this may just be the Lake District activity for you. The sport involves standing up on a surfboard style device and using your arms and a paddle to gently propel yourself through the water without falling in.

Ullswater Paddle-boarding can provide you with services such as paddle-boarding lessons, board hire and lake tours.

The activity is ideal for families, couples or even individuals wishing to take in the exquisiteness of the area.

Please note: These activities can be seasonal, please ring ahead to check availability.

Although the days get shorter and the temperature dips a little, you might be surprised to know that November is actually one of the best times to visit the Lake District! Cooler days are the perfect excuse to throw on your thick, woolly knits and grab your walking sticks, as there’s adventure all around you in the Lake District.

With it being the month before Christmas, you’ll also be able to feel a buzz in the air as local businesses begin to prepare for the festive season ahead, without the stress of getting bogged down in the holiday rush.

There’s also so much going on! Plus, with it still being the height of the Autumn season, just before the transition into Winter commences, the Lake District scenery is definitely at its most unique and picturesque during the month of November.

Have a little read of some of our suggestions as to why you should visit the Lake District this November…

1) Stunning scenery

Hands down, the best thing about Autumn in the Lake District is the bright and colourful landscapes; and, with Autumn officially beginning at the end of September running right through to late December, the scenery is arguably at its most attractive during November. Who doesn’t want to watch one season blend seamlessly into another?

Imagine the dramatic Lakeland fells draped in blankets of red, as the leaves and the fell-top bracken both adopt a luscious orange colour.  Visualize the sounds of crisp, crunchy leaves under your feet as you stroll along our quaint, countryside trails. Picture being able to see your breath materialize in the chill November airthese are just some of the things we love most about the season.

Therefore, if you’re in search of a tranquil, countryside escape to admire the breath-taking scenery and clear your mind, November is certainly the most charming time to visit the Lake District.

2) Surprisingly dry weather!

Contrary to popular belief, November actually tends to be one of the months with lesser rain fall! For this reason, it makes the stunning backdrops even more enjoyable as you can throw back the hood on your winter coat and really take it all in.

november in the lake district

The drier weather also makes way for those fresh, Autumnal mornings we all know and love, where you step outside and feel the cool air against your rosy-red cheeks. These are certainly the best days to embrace the cold weather and take advantage of the abundance of walks the Lake District has to offer.

This is also the time of year you’re most likely to see a cloud inversion due to the presence of colder air. Therefore, if you’re wanting to dodge the winter rain (or even snow), book your next trip to the Lake District this November.

3) Picturesque sunsets

For the reason highlighted in the previous point, dryer weather conditions and cooler air paves the way for some magnificent, Autumnal sunsets. Imagine evening skies alight with tones of bright orange as the sun sets over the dramatic Lake District fells.

There’s also a high possibility of snow-dusted mountain tops which only makes the sunsets that bit more magical, giving you the illusion that you’ve just stepped foot into a fairy-tale.

4) Fewer crowds

Despite the picturesque nature of the season, November is one of the quietest months to visit the Lake District.

There’s no denying that the charming streets of our Lakeland towns can get busy during the summer months, however the seasonal rush certainly quietens off during this timejust before it picks up again closer to Christmas!

HIDDEN GEMS →

Friar’s Crag

During November, you’ll have no problem visiting those tourist hotspots and getting uninterrupted photos with some of the region’s most popular viewpoints.

Therefore, if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat away from bustling crowds, November is the perfect month to book your Lake District getaway.

5) Mulled Wine

Arguably, one of the best things about November in the Lake District is that it is officially acceptable to start drinking mulled wine! Everyone knows the promise of Christmas is generally more exciting than the big day itself, making the run-up to the season the perfect time to treat yourself to this festive delicacy.

FESTIVE BREAKS →

Mulled Wine & Warm Mince Pies

Mulled wine is perfect drink to warm up your hands after a chilly day out on the fells, while getting you excited for the festive month ahead. It will be available in our hotels from early November onwards, which we recommend enjoying next to the comfort of our roaring fireplaces surrounded by those dearest to you.

If mulled wine isn’t your thing, we’ve got an array of other festive treats to tempt you, including Boozy Hot Chocolates, Gingerbread Spiced Lattes and of course, warm Mince Pies.

6) Festive Dining

Now the summer months are long gone and those beach holidays seem a far-off fantasy, it’s time to stop worrying about your ‘summer body’ and completely give in to your temptations. November and December are months to indulge, and you can worry about dieting when January comes round.

Our hotel’s festive dining menus launch early November, making it the ideal month to start enjoying all those naughty yuletide goodies we spend the season longing for.

FESTIVE DINING →

Imagine tucking into succulent slices of roast turkey breast, crispy yet fluffy roast potatoes and who could forget pigs-in-blankets?! If something sweet is what you seek, we will also be launching our Festive Afternoon Teas and the Skiddaw Hotel will be offering a seasonal twist on their Hiker’s Picnic Board.

Our festive menus are extensive and imaginative, guaranteed to satisfy your palette while igniting that festive feeling in your heart.

7) Christmas Lights

All is merry and bright during the month of November in the Lake District, as the quaint little towns switch on their outside Christmas displays for all to see. Expect a twinkling, wonderland as you experience our hotels adorned in stunning Christmas lights from top to toe.

Last year, we invested in some incredible new Christmas lights to spread festive cheer throughout the town of Keswick, down the Borrowdale Valley and within the village of Glenridding.

The local Christmas displays truly are a sight to behold, so if you’re looking for a pre-Christmas break to get the festive juices tingling, a November getaway to the Lake District is an absolute must.

8) Plenty of indoor and outdoor activities

Despite the nights creeping in earlier, there are still plenty of outdoor attractions and activities that are open to the public in November. Whether you fancy trying your hand at kayaking atop of Lake Derwentwater, are tempted to take a walk with an alpaca or would rather ‘go wild’ at the Lake District Wildlife Park, the Lake District is never closed.

If you’re looking to escape the November chill, there are also an array of indoor activities for you to enjoy without the guilt of not using your time wisely. Some of which include Kong Adventure Climbing Wall in Keswick, a trip to the Derwent Pencil Museum, being blown away by the illusions at the Puzzling Place or even an educational visit to the Rheged Centre near Penrith.

There is no better feeling than receiving feedback like this – we love to hear from you after your special day! Our team are whole-heartedly dedicated to capturing all you have envisioned for your wedding day. Here is a letter written to our amazing team at Inn on the Lake after the recent wedding of Mr and Mrs Maachaoui:

Dear Kerri, Johnathan & Team,

How do I even begin to to express our thanks and gratitude?

Our day was so perfect in every – single – way!

To start with, the surrounding scenery is beyond breath-taking and so, set the scene immediately for our fairytale-esque ceremony. The brand-new terrace has much to offer, serving as a relaxed setting for our wedding guests to enjoy a celebratory glass of fizz and a refreshing ice cream from our vendor, ‘Hardy Peddling’. Our little slice of heaven was graced with the incredible Anna Kate Pearson, filling the air with her harp song. It was the perfect place to mingle, observe our photographer (Daley Wilson) in action, and appreciate the stunning views of Ullswater basking in the sunshine.

Our wedding breakfast was one to remember. The room, impeccably decorated, looked like it had fallen straight from the pages of a bridal magazine. I found it hard to absorb how truly dreamy it was. I’d like to extend much praise to Mona who worked so hard to achieve the high standard of perfection we were striving for. Her customer service skills were on-point and our guests loved chatting with her.

Our wedding coordinator, Johnathan, was a true godsend. He took control of our timings and assisted with our flower-gifts for parents and grandparents so we could fully immerse ourselves in experiencing our special day. He ran through everything with us the evening before, making sure we were both happy and ensuring our experience was nothing short of absolute perfection! He was so personally involved in our day, he even assisted in taking my grandma down to the Steamers without hesitation – he really went above and beyond. We really appreciated everything he did for us; he ensured we had the best day of our lives!

Our evening reception was flawless; it was beautifully set up for our guests to enjoy their delectable meals. The impressive quality of all the food was noticed by all. It has been noted by several guests (and ourselves) that the beef was the best they’d ever had, which is a real testament to the Chefs’ hard work and skills. Our sincere thanks go to the Chefs for their contributions to our perfect day – we can’t wait to come back soon for more!

Lorna, the night porter working the night of our wedding, deserves a special mention. She helped us carry our things to our room after our reception and even brought us some extra cold bottles of water – much needed after such a busy day! She was fun, light-hearted, and very pleasant.

In the few days we spent at the Inn on the Lake, we dined in the Orangery a couple of times: the ladies on my side of the family had a meal together here on the eve of the wedding, and the night following our wedding, we dined with friends and family. We were really taken care of by Glen! His thoughtfulness was much appreciated; he came over to ask if we’d like to book a table for the evening, as he was conscious that available bookings were filling quickly. A good knowledge of the food and wine was demonstrated, they served with such professionalism – a real diamond in your team!

The reception and all staff in general were brilliant from the minute we arrived. Daniel, who was working at reception on our wedding eve, was an absolute gem. I needed to swap a couple of names on the seating plan, he assisted me in printing these off so I could adjust my table plan for the following day. His conversation and manners were very pleasant, he even noticed that my dress was Tunisian – I was very impressed he picked up on that!

Nothing was too much for your team – we wished to enjoy our leftover wedding cheese and cake on the following evening, this was arranged for us Tereza. She was on the ball and ready to assist us with anything we desired.

We want to thank Kerri for replying to all our emails timely, answering questions and assisting us with any problems or queries we had. She was also right there on the other end of the phone during the build-up to the wedding, putting our minds at ease that our final plans were set and ready to go. I am in awe of her work ethic to achieve organisational perfection and she truly delivered her service with professionalism and warmth.

Teresa was also very noticeable and helped us solve any issue in the moment. Her personality shone through with us and our guests; she was very personable with me, what a lovely lady!

We really cannot fault any of the hard-working staff. Everything ran seamlessly and with genuine smiles. Various people kept in check with us to make sure our time spent with you at The Inn on The Lake was above the bar and perfect. The collective sincerity and personality across your team of staff was noticed by us and our guests.

We truly had the best and most memorable day of our lives and we’ll be re-living it all for quite a while. We will certainly be recommending anyone and everyone to book a stay with you (or a wedding!)

Thank you so much, we can’t wait to visit again soon.

On the 3rd September, the Inn on the Lake hosted our second ‘Tapas on the Terrace’ event, simulating our very own sunny Spanish holiday right in the heart of the Lake District. By emulating these delicious delicacies amidst our own scenes of natural beauty, we have proved you don’t have to go far to feel the relaxation going abroad brings you.

Our 4-star hotel’s soiree was a sell-out event featuring an hour of unlimited red or white sangria, an array of tantalising Summer tapas dishes, and a euphoric atmosphere created by live music. All of this happened under the glare of the glorious sun on one of the UK’s warmest days of the year – the universe was looking out for us!

Tapas on the Terrace Highlights

Guests were metaphorically transported to the sun-drenched shores of Spain as they stepped onto our brand-new 75-metre terrace which overlooks Ullswater; a grand architectural marvel costing £600,000 which stands proudly as one of the largest outdoor terraces in the Lake District.

The star of the show was undoubtedly the sumptuous selection of tapas dishes that graced the tables. Particularly note-worthy dishes included the melt-in-your-mouth salt and pepper calamari, the fiery and flavourful spicy pork meatballs bathed in a rich tomato sauce and the decadent chocolate churros, which provided the perfect sweet ending to the afternoon feast.

Gary Wilson, General Manager of the Inn on the Lake expressed his great enthusiasm: “our ‘Tapas on the Terrace’ event was an overwhelming success! The ambience, food and the sheer joy of our guests made it a truly memorable day. It’s incredibly rewarding to hear the positive feedback from both our valued visitors and our cherished locals. We aimed to bring a slice of Spain to Ullswater, and it seems we hit the mark!”

The Future for Inn on the Lake

The Inn on the Lake continues to stand as a beacon of hospitality and innovation in the Lake District. The unveiling of the breathtaking terrace is a testament to our dedication, providing guests with unparalleled experiences in a setting of natural beauty that only the Lake District can offer.

As the Inn on the Lake looks toward the future, we remain committed to crafting extraordinary moments for our guests, whether that be through gourmet culinary experiences, relaxing stays, or captivating events on the terrace.

Imagine this: you are sitting on the balcony with a loved one, a glass of wine in hand, admiring the scenery. The moonlight reflects off the lake, you are completely in the moment, and you realise that you can forget about reality for the duration of your stay.

Please note: The artist’s impressions only include depictions of the room interiors, and the balcony has not been incorporated into this digital artwork. Both of these room types WILL have balconies once complete.

Why should you celebrate a special occasion?

Have you got a special occasion coming up? Maybe you aren’t sure how to celebrate, or even if you should celebrate? Well, here are some reasons why you SHOULD celebrate:

  • Creating Memories: Memories serve to form our identity, emotions and weave our connections with others. They act as an archive for our experiences, enabling us to relive joyful and meaningful events long after they have passed. We can nurture our relationships with our memories as they provide shared stories and bonding experiences with those we love. They enrich our lives and give them purpose.

  • Creating Traditions: Celebrating a milestone or achievement encourages unity and inclusivity within a family, it enables a sense of belonging and a shared identity among relatives. Traditions provide consistency and stability, especially during times of change and uncertainty. It also offers an opportunity for bonding which surpasses generational divides.

  • Promoting Wellbeing: Celebrating special occasions allows us to feel a large variety of positive emotions such as joy, excitement, pride, peace and tranquility. It provides us with a break from routine, taking us into a world where our stressors and responsibilities can be left behind for a short while so we can temporarily feel relief and lightness. We are also reminded to appreciate the supportive circle that exists around us.

  • Marking Milestones: This allows us a period of reflection and renewal as we acknowledge our achievements and progress. We can measure how far we have come and reignite our motivation to continue our self-development in the future. It helps us to gain a sense of accomplishment, boosting self-esteem and find inspiration to set new goals.
