Over the past year while more and more Brits have been appreciating the amazing destinations within their own country as opposed to going abroad, interest in visiting the Lake District has sky rocketed. Although, it really is no wonder with the sheer amount of attractions, restaurants, cafes, bars and of course, breath-taking scenery that the area has to offer!
If, like many of us, you’ve seen beautiful photos of the Lake District being posted all over the internet and fancy experiencing it for yourself but you may not be entirely sure what to bring with you… then grab your overnight bag and let us help you decide what to pack for a weekend in the Lake District!
1) Waking Boots
It’s Lake District law that you wear a sturdy pair of waking boots in the Lake District! Whether you bring your own, or purchase a pair while you’re here and support the local shops – waking boots are a must.
This is especially the case if you’re wanting to take to the fells (and why wouldn’t you?!) Waterproof walking boots are always recommended.
2) Raincoat
We can’t pretend it doesn’t rain in the Lake District, because it does… It’s why the region is so scenic after all! BUT it doesn’t stop the area being magnificently beautiful! It just means you need to be prepared because you never know when it will throw a shower.
A good quality waterproof will be your best friend while you’re in the area and if you are planning on walking some Wainwrights while you’re here, a wind-proof raincoat is even better!

3) Swimwear
This might seem like an odd one, but with wild swimming in the Lake District becoming increasingly popular, you just never know when you might want to take a dip in a lake, river, tarn or stream!
Or, on the other hand, the Lake District has an impressive selection of luxury spas. So, if open water swimming isn’t for you, perhaps you might be interested in booking a relaxing spa day and of course you’ll need a cossie for that!
Our favourite is The Falls Spa located within the Borrowdale Valley. It’s got a 16-metre heated hydrotherapy pool that overlooks Derwentwater and Catbells among other fantastic facilities.
4) Phone or camera
A picture speaks a thousand words, and the stunning scenery of the Lake District is guaranteed to leave you speechless. For this reason, make sure to bring your smart phone or a camera to capture the astounding views and wonderful memories you are guaranteed to make while you’re here.
5) Positive attitude!
If you’re planning on visiting the area and go hiking, there’s no denying that it can sometimes get strenuous – especially if you are not used to it. Our best advice for you is to stay positive and remember, it’ll be worth all the hard work for the view at the top.
6) Rucksack
One of the most important accessories you can have if you’re planning on doing a lot of waking in the Lake District is a reliable rucksack! Ideal for carrying your rain coat, lunch, camera, gloves and anything else you may want to bring along with you.
It certainly saves you trying to carry everything, which we promise you will be grateful for.
7) Mid layer
This is an especially important item if the purpose of your visit is to go fell walking and appreciate the famous Lake District scenery. Even in the summer months, the top of those mountains can still get chilly, especially if there’s a breeze.
For this reason, we recommend bringing a cosy mid layer that you can wrap up and put in your rucksack in case you need it.
8) Something nice to wear!
The Lake District isn’t all about throwing on your walking gear and walking around in nature come rain or shine… In fact, the Lake District is full of luxurious hotels, fancy restaurants and swanky bars that you will want to get dressed up and visit.
Just some of our favourite restaurants include:
- Brasserie 31 at the Skiddaw Hotel in Keswick
- Brossen Steakhouse at the Inn on the Square in Keswick
- Lake View Restaurant at Inn on the Lake in Glenridding
- Mizu-Pan Asian Restaurant at the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa in Borrowdale
9) Phone charger
Although it may seem obvious, a phone charger is a must and it’s an item that is too easy to forget to grab while you’re packing!
Not only does it mean your phone will stay charged so you can snap lots of happy keepsakes from your trip, but it is very important to have your phone with you if you are out walking in case you need to contact someone.
The Lake District is a wonderful place to explore, but it is always best to be prepared.
10) A brolly
Similar to point one, an umbrella is also a good item to pack for a weekend in the Lake District. The reason for this as well as a raincoat is simply because you don’t always want to wear an anorak – especially if you are dressed up for a nice, meal out. That way, you’re still sheltered from the rain.
